T-town superstars undeniably like to work with different directors but occasionally, prefer to repeat some directors to woo success at the BO. Heady combinations like Mahesh-Trivikram, Pawan Kalyan-Suryah, NTR Jr-Vinayak and Allu Arjun-Sukumar evoked enough hype among viewers and trade circles as fans just love to see such re-unions. It is believed that the ‘duo combination’ works magic.
Apparently, big producers who rope in a ‘crazy team’ considered lucky are just not bothered about the huge pay packets they have to shell out. Following up on Arya 2 (Allu Arjun-Sukumar) and Adhurs (NTR Jr-Vinayak), trade pundits are pinning big hopes on Pawan Kalyan-Suryah’s Puli and Mahesh-Trivikram’s untitled film, to receive overwhelming response.
With the exception of NTR-Vinayak, Mahesh-Gunasekar and Ravi-Teja-Puri Jagannath teams, other duos joined hands only twice till date. “Director Vinayak is more like a brother to me and also he is a true professional and knows how to extract the best from me,” says NTR Jr. Likewise, even Ravi Teja shares a great bonhomie with director Puri. After smashing hits like Idiot and Amma Nanna O Tamilammayi the duo was hailed as ‘hotshot’ before Neninthe scuttled their dream run. “Our friendship is much beyond films,” said the lanky actor.
Even yesteryear superstars had their share of favourite directors. Thespian actor NTR had Kamalakar Kameshwar Rao and K Raghavendra Rao, while ANR preferred Adurti Subbarao and Madhusudan Rao. Even the subsequent generation followed it up — Chiranjeevi did more films with Kodandarami Reddy and K Raghavendra Rao, while Balakrishna opted for Kodandarami Reddy and Kodi Ramakrishna.
New generation stars like Mahesh Babu, NTR Jr and Pawan Kalyan too, aren’t left behind. Mahesh Babu did three films with director Gunasekar (Okkadu, Arjun and Sainikudu) and NTR Jr did a hat-trick with director V V Vinayak (Aadi, Samba and Adhurs). Pawan Kalyan did two films with director Karunakaran (Tholi Prema and Baalu) and is now working with Tamil director S J Suryah for the second time in his upcoming film Puli. “We did a breezy romantic entertainer Kushi together but now we have joined hands for a more purposeful and message-oriented cop film,” said director S J Surya.
Similarly, Meher Ramesh is quite excited about teaming up with NTR Jr in Shakti after the not-so-impressive Kantri. “I have chosen a unique script that can accommodate a larger-than-life role which also offers a big span to live up to the big expectations,” says the promising filmmaker. Though heady combinations too had their share of duds like Sainikudu, Baalu, Kantri and Neninthe, it hasn’t deterred producer Aditya Babu from roping in Allu Arjun and Sukumar for Arya 2 by shelling out big bucks. “Of course, big-time combinations evoke huge hype and also you can spend lavishly since buyers will procure them for good sums. However, we need a solid script to live up to the big expectations,” he explains. ‘Odd combinations of stars and directors belonging to different schools of filmmaking could boomerang,” he sums up the trend with a precautionary note.

New Tensions For Kajal, Ileana

So far, they have been ruling the roost in the Tollywood circuit and though they had neck to neck competition, they always managed to take turns and sit on the top. We are talking about the saucy seductress Kajal Agarwal and the beautiful Ileana. Now, the buzz is that they have found a new tension.
That is in the form of the new beauty on the block. She is none other than Tapsee and barely has she made her debut in the Telugu circuit that offers have been flowing for her in galore. She is coming up with ‘Jhummandi Naadam’ beside Manchu Manoj. Sources say that Tapsee has already got few plum projects on her hand and she just has to sign the dotted line.
This is giving few jitters to Kajal and Ileana. As a back up, they are said to be venturing out into Tamil and other regions so that they have enough support if the Tapsee tsunami continues to stay a little longer. The coming days will give a clear picture on where each beauty stands.

Tollywood follows bollywood

While film promotional activities in B-town can be fairly innovative (Aamir Khan went on an incognito countrywide tour for 3 Idiots and Shahid-Genelia did a promotional campaign in a car for Chance Pe Dance), it’s T-town’s turn to do its bit to market new films.
NTR Jr released a colourful limited edition calendar to promote his latest film, while the seasoned Venkatesh has just launched a smart promotional kit inspired by his comic caper. “Besides the usual stationery, we have specially designed kites and other merchandise based on the film’s tagline ‘Be Positive’,” reveals Venky.
For an industry that has never resorted to publicity gimmicks or promotional activity, what’s making Tollywood think of it now?
“Well some films require a lot of publicity. We’d created special cricket caps for fans and had distributed them at Chepauk Stadium (Chennai) to promote our Tamil production Vasantha Maaligai in 1970,” he rewinds. According to industry estimates, most promotional acts (merchandise, apparel inspired by a film) cost a modest Rs 2-3 lakh, while the major chunk of the promotional budget earmarked for posters, hoardings, et al could be anything between Rs 25 lakh and Rs 1.5 crore.
The film promotional act began way back in 1957, when producers of the mythological film Mayabazar released calendars of legendary NTR as Lord Krishna and it was a complete sellout. This made other leading production houses flood the markets with colourful calendars and various kits to promote their respective films. Venkatesh’s Kalisundam Raa had marketed memorabilia in 2000 and later Pawan Kalyan did the same for Johnny (2003) and Baalu (2005). “Some production houses launched customised apparel inspired by the outfits actors wore in the film. But such activities have worked only when the film had a big star cast,” says Karunakaran who directed Baalu.
The small screen has proved to be a great vehicle to promote films. Stars are now routinely promoting their films on game shows. Actor Arun who appeared on 40 TV shows to promote Katha says, “aggressive marketing is necessary to promote a film. In fact, Aamir Khan’s novel promotional methods is inspirational.” Even stars of films like Kurradu and Pravarakyudu appeared on game shows to wow viewers.
Even the ‘meet the stars’ activity is a fad that’s gaining popularity. Siddharth (Oy), Allu Arjun (Arya 2), and Venkatesh (Namo Venkatesa) took part in these interactive campaigns of late. Producer Chintalapudi Srinivas who’s revived the old promotional practice of touring the state with the film crew (with Kalidasu and Current) says, “The audience will turn up in theatres in large numbers to watch stars because they’ll connect to the films. This activity helps promote upcoming stars and banners in a big way.”
It’s heartening to see that Telugu filmmakers have realised the importance of film promotional activities in creating buzz about films much before they hit the screens.
Teja to direct Venkatesh?
Cinemotagrapher turned director-cum-producer shot into lime light with “Chitram” and came out with a string of hits. But in recent times, he is going through a lean phase with his every film sinking at the box office without a trace.
According to Film Nagar sources, Teja has decided to mend his casual ways and become a serious film maker once again. It is understood that he created a credible script and shown that to producer D Suresh Babu who is said to have liked what he read.
Now, the buzz is that Suresh Productions will make the film to be directed by Teja and Venkatesh would be the hero.

Tollywood stars demand crores!
The ever rising production costs in the Telugu film industry have led to the need for corrective measures, and this is the reason why the Telugu film Producer’s Council (TFPC) declared an emergency meeting on Tuesday to deliberate on the issue. The council came up with different measures like completing the film in 45 days and also reducing a film's negative consumption.
According to a prominent personality, the remuneration given to the leading stars is the major component in all production budgets, which have been rising considerably since the last three years. To give a few examples, Mahesh Babu, (with no releases) has demanded Rs 5 to rs 7 crores , while Jnr NTR demanded Rs 10 crore from Dil Raju, the producer of ongoing Brindavanam.
When estimated, the average cost of a Telugu film with big stars has reached Rs. 25 to 30 crores. The producer receives very little profit when the film becomes a hit and loses his investment even when the film becomes a partial hit and all this because the remuneration of artistes and the crew constitutes 50% of the total production costs, leaving only 50% for the film.
